Envision working a 100 hour work week as a slave, being so edgy for food that you eat snakes, rodents, and human carcasses to remain alive, and being compelled to observe open executions of your nearest relatives. This is the truth for the 176,000 political and acquainted detainees living in North Korean penitentiaries without any rights, no preliminary, and no explanation. The world should respect the human rights maltreatment in North Korean as a significant issue on the off chance that we wish to stop the torment, murder, and starvation that it upholds on its kin. North Korea has had its detainment facilities for over 5 decades, and its experience returns to the Korean War, when they put away their Prisoners of War and the individuals from the resistance in the camps. Cath Anne: [00:00:20] Today I really wanted to get into some specifics about academic writing and how you can work to improve your academic writing. More specifically Im just going to bring up what we will discuss today. It is actually a really interesting topic. Cath Anne: [00:00:41] Were going to be discussing how to modify your academic writing and Im going to identify find common mistakes made by students when theyre writing an academic paper. We will also talk about how you can identify them and address them. Cath Anne: [00:00:59] So, this doesnt have to do with creative writing or writing a letter to your friend. It is strictly academic writing or formal business writing. These tips can apply to that as well. Cath Anne: [00:01:14] So, maybe you have commonly made some mistakes in your papers and youre looking to get better grades on them. Dont worry, Im here to help and provide you with a few tips that hopefully will enhance your academic writing. Were going to get into some real specifics around this, so Im really excited share with you. Cath Anne: [00:01:36] Tip number 1: dont use contractions. Now, what are contractions? Again, this is for academic writing. Contractions are words like dont, cant, shouldnt, couldnt, wouldnt, isnt, havent and hasnt. Cath Anne: [00:01:55] These are the shorter forms of words like do not, cannot, could not, would not, should not, is not, have not, and has not. Cath Anne: [00:02:07] It is better to write out the word in full within your academic paper or in your business writing because it just looks more professional. Notice how for example with cannot. It is one word is can it condensed into cannot. Whereas, if you write do not it still remains as two separate words. So thats important to know when you are expanding contractions. This is a really important one because its something that can slip your mind when youre writing an actual paper. Its important to be attentive to using contractions through your paper. Always make sure that you go over your paper before you hand it in and make sure that you are not using contractions. It makes your writing seem a little bit too colloquial. Expand those words and sound more professional. Cath Anne: [00:03:23] Tip number two is to avoid: there are or there is. This might seem like a strange one but let me explain. Why do we avoid there are or there is when we write? We dont want our sentences to be too wordy or convoluted. We want our sentences to be concise and to the point. So, we use there are it adds extra words that dont need to be there. Theyre redundant. So, let me give you a couple of examples of this. There are many issues that politicians face daily. So, thats adding a time and more words to your point. You dont need there are at the beginning of this sentence. Instead you could just write, Politicians face many issues on a daily basis. This sentence is much simpler and to the point. Cath Anne: [00:04:30] Lets do another example, There are many developments that the U.N. supports. So, again we have there are at the beginning of the sentence. We dont need that kind of clutter in the sentence. We would much rather say, The U.N. supports many developments. So, as you can see, shortening those sentences and making them much more concise is better. That is going to get you more points in your essay. Cath Anne: [00:05:06] Number three is: avoid words like really, very, a lot, and so. The reason for this is that it weakens your writing when youre using these words. You do not need to use these words It makes it come across as a little bit more immature. They dont add anything to your writing. So, lets look at an example, Many people think cooking is very hard. Cath Anne: [00:06:07] Instead of using the words very hard you can change it to something else. Maybe the word difficult. So, lets say, Many people think cooking is difficult. It strengthens the sentence. A second example, Trumps presidency is really controversial. If you want this sentence to be a bit stronger take the word really out because the word controversial stands alone. It is a strong word in and of itself. So, to strengthen that sentence you will go on to say, Trumps presidency is controversial. Lets do another example, A lot of the boys like to play soccer. Cath Anne: [00:07:03] The word a lot weakens the sentence. Instead of a lot we can use many. Many of the boys like to play soccer. Cath Anne: [00:07:15] We can use many because the boys is countable or plural. Cath Anne: [00:07:52] Tip number four: passive voice versus active voice. Admittedly, this is probably one of my weakest points that I experienced when I was in undergrad. I always wrote in the passive voice. I found it really hard to write in the active voice. Sometimes its something that I continue to have to work on. Cath Anne: [00:08:21] I wanted to make mention first that if you are studying sciences or youre in the science disciplines you can use the passive voice. There are reports that are written in the passive voice so its okay to use a passive voice on occasion. Cath Anne: [00:08:43] If youre studying the humanities, sociology, English, history, philosophy, psychology, or any of those subjects you must use the active voice. That is an essential in academic writing in the humanities. Lets talk about the differences between passive voice and active voice. We will use an example to do this. For example, Immigration reforms were implemented by Trudeau. That sentence is written in the passive voice. Here we have the past tense of the verb to be. So, we have were and we also have the past participle of the verb to implement so, implemented. Then we also have the word by which is usually something that indicates that we are speaking in the passive voice. As you can see its just not a very strong sentence. It takes away from what Trudeau has done; it doesnt put him up front and center within the sentence. Cath Anne: [00:09:57] We want the sentence to be a lot stronger and straight forward. The sentence would be much stronger if it was written as, Trudeau implemented immigration reforms. This strengthens the message of the sentence. As opposed to, Immigration reforms were implemented by Trudeau. We now hear a much stronger message which is, Trudeau implemented immigration reform. Cath Anne: [00:10:37] We are finally at our last tip. Tip number five. It goes along with the rest of the tips which is: use strong verbs. There is a difference between strong verbs and weak verbs. Lets do another example. A weak verb is, He gave assistance to my friend. So, here were using the word gave with the noun assistance. As you can see, the word assistance can be actually used as a verb. So a stronger way to say this would be, He assisted my friend. Its much more direct. The difference between these two sentences is that the word assistance in the first sentence is a noun. Cath Anne: [00:12:00] That is it for this week. I hope that this session was of benefit. Case Example Thomas Lanier Williams, or Tennessee Williams as he was later known, was born on March 26, 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi. He was the second of three children, he had an older sister Rose and a younger brother Dakin, born to Cornelius and Edwina Williams. Because Williams’ father was a traveling shoe salesman for much of his early childhood he and his family lived with his maternal grandparents. However, due to the nature of his grandfather’s work as an Episcopal minister the family moved often; residing in several Mississippi towns during Williams’ first 7 years. During those early years he managed to grow close to his sister Rose and his grandfather. In 1918, Cornelius secured a position at a shoe factory which allowed him to move the family to St. Louis, Missouri. If abortions became illegal families would be left with nothing but heartache and sorrow for something that can ultimately b e fixed. Women of rape cases have every right to an abortion if they choose.Why should they have to keep a baby that was made with a man that they never wanted to sleep with in the first place? According to Bioethicist Andrew Varga, â€Å"It is also said that a pregnancy caused by rape or incest is the result of a grave injustice and that the victim should not be obliged to carry the fetus to viability. This would keep reminding her for nine months of the violence committed against her and would just increase her mental anguish (1). † As Varga states, the child would be a constant reminder to the mother of the pain and violence that she went through.If abortion was to become illegal, women would have to keep a child that was made out of fear. And what if that woman didn’t want children, or wasn’t ready for a child at that point in her life? She shouldn’t have to keep a child that she never planned on in the first place. Although rape is a horrible part of life, caring a child with sever deformities or fatal diseases can be a far worse tragedy to go through. Many women conceive children with deformities or find out that their child is a victim of a terrible disease every day. It should be their choice to keep the child or to terminate the pregnancy.Having a child with a deformity is a lot of work that some people just aren’t ready for or wouldn’t be able to handle. It would be worse for them to actually keep the child and not be able to care for it the right way as opposed to terminating the pregnancy while the fetus is still mostly undeveloped. Or what if the child has a horrible fatal disease and won’t live more then a few weeks or even months. Why should the parents have to go through all of that heartbreak and pain, become attached to their child, and then lose him/her in such a short period of time?Andrea Peyser’s editorial in the New York Post describes a horrifying story of abortion of a woman named Ilene Jaroslaw. Mrs. Jaroslaw received a routine sonogram in her 17th week of pregnancy which showed that her unborn child had one hundred percent fatal brain abnormality â€Å"Half of them die before birth†¦ of the other half that survive, they live a few hours or weeks, maybe months†¦ After the horrific news, Ilene learned that her only chance to have another baby – and spare her kids the agony of a birth followed by a funeral – was to have an abortion. 1)† Sometimes the only way to make life better is to have an abortion and save the family from having to go through a birth and death in a matter of weeks. Abortions are sometimes needed when there is a deformity with the child; however, they are also needed if the mother’s health is jeopardized. Some women discover late in their pregnancy that there is a fatal problem with their child, which will inevitably have an effect on the mother, possibly even becoming fatal. Molly Ginty describes the story of a woman by the name of Tammy Watts.In her eighth month of her planned pregnancy, Tammy received a routine ultrasound. She couldn’t wait to meet her first child. During her ultrasound, Tammy discovered that her child had â€Å"Trisomy 13, a chromosomal abnormality that causes severe deformities and carries no hope of survival (1). † Because her child was already dying and her life was at stake, Tammy received a late term abortion. If it weren’t for that abortion Tammy most likely wouldn’t be alive and neither would her daughter Savvy, her daughter after the abortion.It’s in times like these that abortions are very much needed for women. If they are not received many more women will lose their lives. Overall, abortion is a horrible thing. However, there are many circumstances where one is needed. Chances are that you may havecontracted the Ebola virus. Ebola was first discovered in the village of Yambuku(1) nearthe Ebola Riverin Zaire. Since its discovery, there have beenfour outbreaks of this disease. There are three known strains, ofvariations of ebola. There is no known cure forthis disease(2).Ebola has become one of the most mysterious and feared virusesonthe face of this earth. Ebolas first documented appearance was in Zaire in 1976. Noone knowswhere ebola comes from or what the original host is.However, scientists knowthat man is not ebolas natural host(3).The host was first suspected of beingcarried by monkeys in the African rain forests(4), but in one case the monkeysat a holding facility broke out and had to be killed. In the pursuit of a cure and an origin, there have beenseveral teams ofscientists whose top priority is to find theviruses origin(5). The teams havetrekked through the rainforests of Africa to collecting different species ofanimals,bugs, and plant life. Bugs are also collected from the hospitals andfrom the surrounding huts of the villages. So far 36,000specimens have beencollected. Once they have been gathered, the specimens are put into liquidnitrogen and flown back to theUnited States, where they are studied at theCenters for DiseaseControl in Atlanta Georgia and the Army Medical ResearchInstituteof Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick Md.,(6). Researchers havediscovered the source of human infection for all level fourorganisms exceptebola(7). This means that all organisns that cause deadly viruses have beencontained and studied, and have had antibodies created to ward of the illnessesthat are caused.Although Ebola is a mystery to humans, the virus isrelatively hard to catch and it kills quickly, lessening the chance victims willinfect others. It is transmitted by contactwith bodily fluids like blood, vomitand semen or contaminated syringes and is not known to be passed along throughcasual contact(8). When the first outbreak of ebola occurred, it was in 1976 in Zaire and inSudan at the same time. There were 318 cases reported in Zaire and 240 of thosecases proved to be fatal. In Sudan, there were 284 cases and 134 of those casesproved to befatal. In 1979, there was another small epidemic in the same regionof Sudan. In 1989 there was a breakout in Reston Virginia,at a monkey holdingfacility, that killed over 400 monkeys thathad been shipped from the Phillines. This strand however, is only lethal to monkeys and id not a threat to humans(9). In 1995, there was an outbreak in Kikwit Zaire that claimed 233 lives. Atleast7 people survived that outbreak becauses of a new breakthrough that is apossible solution to the loss of lives that are suffered in a outbreak. Bloodfrom one surviving patient can be transfusedto a person of the same blood typeto possibly save the persons life. Such was the case in 1995(10). Scientistswere able tofind who the first person to contract the virus was in 1995. Themans name was Gaspard Menga. Menga infected his family, and his familyinfected others(11). Business Ethics and social responsibility - Essay Example Since these are costly ethical activities that seem irrelevant to the business goal of maximizing owner value, many businesses choose to bluff and engage in some amount of deception and mask these little sins by justifying them with ethical theories that say such acts are ethical under the circumstances. This report examines these theories and perspectives on business ethics to determine if businesses can be forgiven for unethical behavior and, if so, at what point should one draw the demarcation line. Business ethics has been the focus of passionate debates since the time of Plato and Socrates. The possible reason for the diverging views is that people always have different concepts and perceptions of what is good or bad, and what is right and wrong. Aronson (2001) believes the study of business ethics can help provide the standards for determining what behavior is good and bad or what is right and wrong. The literature on business ethics suggests ways to discuss the many different perspectives or theories by grouping them according to their similarities. The most frequently used perspectives fall under two groups of theory called deontology and teleology. Deontology is also described as formalism while teleology is utilitarianism, which means that the former is non-consequentialist while the latter is consequentialist (Christensen, 2005). In ethics, formalism is defined as a concept that views an act as right or wrong irrespective of the consequences, while utilitarianism holds that right conduct is determined by its usefulness in promoting the most good for the largest number of persons and thus keeps an eye on the consequences of the act. From these definitions, one can start forming an idea of which of deontology and teleology is the better ethical approach to business. 2.a. Teleology & Deontology Teleology and deontology essentially uphold the same behavior that businesses should observe, which is business ethics. They differ only in their perspectives, means and desired results. Teleological theories focus on the "what" whereas the deontological view looks at the "how" of ethical behavior (Christensen, 2005). This means that in teleology, the outcome is more important than the intent, which is the reverse in deontology. Accordingly, teleology and deontology are traditionally seen as opposing viewpoints, with the former looking into the future to determine the best outcomes for everyone while the latter looking back in history to establish ethical guideposts from traditional culture and religion (Brady, 1985). Teleology is defined as the theory in which the only right-making properties are those that promote the good (Gaus, 2001). As for deontology, it is the perspective of doing what is morally right, regardless of the amount of good or evil that results from the act (Christ ensen,2005). Thus, teleology promotes what is good, while deontology promotes what is right (Gaus, 2001). For teleology, the more important thing is the outcome and less the behavior. Background to the experimental work RESISTOR POWER RATINGS The amount of power in a resistor is important because the power rating of the resistor must be high enough to handle the expected power in the circuit. In order to differentiate between the resistors value and confirming the values and tolerance when they are connected to the circuit, a color coding system is used. The resistors used in this experiment are coded with four bands. The first and the second band closer to the end represent the first and second digit respectively. MEASURING VOLTAGE A DMM has a floating common, so it can be connected to any point in the circuit and read the correct voltage between the two leads. Measuring voltage with oscilloscope may create a grounding problem since the generator and the oscilloscope have a common ground. The problem occurs when trying to measure the voltage across the component that is not connected to ground. Trying to do so, will effectively short out of the circuit all the components that connected from the terminal at which the measurement is taken to the ground terminal and the voltage measured is meaningless. This is become very important when current sensitive components like the filament bulb are connected in the circuit. The resistor is therefore the current limiting impedance. Shorting out the resistor could raise the current to levels that could cause permanent damage to the bulb. The solution to the problem is usually to recognise the grounding points of the circuit and connecting the oscilloscope to these points only. To find out the voltage across the component which is not connected to ground, the method used is to subtract the measured volt age from the input voltage THE FILAMENT LAMP (7) The filament is made of tungsten wire and it is essentially a device for converting electrical input energy into an output of radiant energy in the form of light and heat. According the temperature at which the filament glows will determine the appearance of the light emitted. The tungsten wire is very fine in diameter; the wire is coil as shown in Fig. 1.1.4-1. The closer the spacing of the coils the hotter the filament can operate. The filament lamp to be used in this experiment is yellow filament lamp size 4mm and it is rated at 12V, 30mA with output energy of 0.7 Lumens. The ideal operation condition for AC is stabilized 50Hz. This bulb is sensitive to operation with DC as the one direction current flow causes an effect named DC notching where the filament wire is becoming weak. High Altitude Living Low Altitude Training Essay

Altitude training describes training practice by athlete’s training in oxygen deprived conditions for several weeks to increase their performance endurance. Often, there are altitudes training camps strategically designed for this objective (Geiser, Vogt, Billeter, Zuleger, Belforti & Hoppeler, 2001). Altitude training further entails simulated or natural altitude conditions in the training course often as a precursor to a major competition event. The conditions are maintained while the training athlete is in the training process, during exercises and while at rest. Despite this, altitude training strategy exposes the athlete to hypoxia, low oxygen pressure, thereby resulting to hypoxemia, tissue oxygenation and lower blood. In addition, altitude tolerance exposure determinants are also poorly understood (Tiollier, Schmitt, Burnat, Fouillot, Robach, Filaire, et al., 2005). Moreover, hypoxia condition training at a practical level as the training intensity management is a principal problem. Under such conditions, maximal exercise capacity of an athlete reduces drastically. High living and low training concept arose to improve on the defects of altitude training. It involves sleeping or living at high altitude thereby stimulating increase in volume of red blood cells while training at sea level to conserve an athlete’s training intensity. This helps to overcome multiple training related problems while posting consistent adaptations. Besides, living high and training low at low altitude triggered renal hormone erythropoietin (EPO) secretion (Wilber, 2013). In turn, the hormone stimulates the synthesis of red blood cells provided there is sufficient ‘altitude dose.’ Therefore, the high altitude living low altitude training rationale in sporting events was founded on a combination of altitude and rigorous practice to boost the volume of red blood cells. In so doing, there was a boost in an athlete’s endurance performance. Based on this finding, several hypoxic facilities across the worldwide have been established by various sports federations over the years. Learning by Yourself or with a Teacher: What’s Better?

Some people think that it is always better to have a teacher while others believe that they can learn better by themselves. In my opinion, the best way of learning is always with a teacher. There are lots of reasons for that but I would like to focus on three of them which I consider most important. First of all, teachers can give me reasonable explanations when I do not understand subject matters. It is always better to have a teacher, whom I can depend on, to solve the problem or to dispel my confusion. Otherwise, I would learn the subject by heart without comprehending its real meaning. Second, since an educational process is difficult people often make mistakes while exercising or learning. That is way, it is always better to learn with a teacher who will correct my mistakes and focus my attention on the reasons why I make such. In addition, dealing with students and assisting them gain higher levels of knowledge make teachers into people with a great deal of experience and erudition. I think that they can help me not only manage with difficulties but they can also pass on me a bit of their wisdom and knowledge. On the contrary there are those who think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. The reasons might be that they feel sufficient self-confidence or they do not need any outer help while learning and exercising. Besides correcting mistakes and giving different explanations, teachers are valuable sources of advice and help. That is why, I truly believe that it is always better to have a teacher when I climb the ladder of success.
